Reversed Tarot Cards: What They Mean

A reversed card — one that appears upside down — adds nuance to a reading. There's no single rule for reversals; most readers use one of a few consistent approaches.

Blocked or weakened energy

The most common reading: the card's upright energy is blocked, delayed or weakened. The Sun reversed isn't darkness, but joy that's clouded or held back.

The opposite or shadow side

Some readers treat a reversal as the card's opposite or shadow expression — its harder, less balanced form.

An internal focus

A reversal can also turn the card inward: the theme is playing out privately or emotionally rather than in the outside world.

Pick one approach and stay consistent

Reversals only confuse when you switch methods mid-reading. Choose one interpretation style and apply it consistently. Our spreads include orientations so you can practice.
