What Is Numerology? A Beginner's Guide
Numerology is the belief that numbers carry meaning and that the numbers in your birth date and name can describe your personality and life path. It's an ancient practice with a simple, repeatable method anyone can try.
Where numerology comes from
The most common system today is Pythagorean numerology, named after the Greek mathematician. It assigns numbers to letters and reduces dates to single digits, each with its own traditional meaning.
The core numbers
Your Life Path Number (from your birth date) is the most important. Others include the Birthday Number, and the Destiny, Soul and Personality numbers derived from your name.
How numbers are reduced
Numerology reduces multi-digit numbers to a single digit by adding them up — 1987 becomes 1+9+8+7 = 25, then 2+5 = 7. The exceptions are master numbers 11, 22 and 33.
Try it yourself
The best way to understand numerology is to calculate your own numbers. Start with your Life Path Number and read what it traditionally means.
